He was an English artist, born in Crudwell Wiltshire. His early works were mainly landscapes and interiors with figures in a style influenced by James McNeill Whistler.
Later he gained success as a portrait painter and in 1911 became a founder member of the National Portrait Society. In 1913 he became a member of the International Society.
During the war he painted a number of distinguished sailors and soldiers who's portraits are know hung in the Imperial War Museun and The National Maritime Museum.
