He was born in Manchester and during his long career was to become one of Manchesters best known portrait painters. He studied in Paris and in 1918 at The Manchester School of Art along with L. S. Lowry, this was under the instruction of Adolphe Valette. His first exhibition was in 1924 at The Manchester City Gallery and he had many further shows during the 1930's and 1940's in London and Manchester with a retrospective exhibition at Salford City Art Gallary in 1948.
Painted in 1942, The Crucifixion, which is one of his most powerful paintings is in the Ben Uri Gallery in London.
In the 60's and 70's he also had solo exhitions at The Tib Lane Gallery. His work is in many public collections including The National Portrait Gallery in London.
