He was born in Lanark and attended Lanark Grammar School. He then served his apprenticeship as a telephone engineer before moving to Glasgow in the 1980's.
He gained a BA in English and Philosophy from Strathclyde University and attened The Glasgow School of Art. He was soon painting, making jewellery and eventually became the director of the 1990's Gallery in Otago Street. He always sought to expand his artistic and intellectual skills. He reserched and wrote relentlessly on The Templer Knights,The Stone of Destiny, William Wallace and Alexander (Greek) Thompson.
He reviewed books, art exhibitions and wrote for magazines and newspapers, including The Glasgow Herald. He wrote poetry prolifically. In the 1990's his painting evolved and he held some 30 plus exhibtions in venues ranging from private homes to the Glasgow Hilton. Matt believed that visual art should be accessible to all.
