Roger was born in Tyldesly, Lancashire and he is well known for his paintings, drawings, lino prints and mono prints of the industrial surroundings in which he was brought up.
He studied at The Manchester College of Art from 1946 - 1952
subsequently becoming the Principal at Bolton College of Art and Design from 1978 - 1986. He was elected President of The Manchester Academy of Fine Art in 1969 remaining in the post until 1976. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in numerous public and private collections. He died in 1996 after suffering from leukaemia. A book on his life, which is entitled Roger Hampson - A Lost Landscape was published in 2009 to coincide with a highly successful retrospective exhibition which was held at Gallery Oldham.
