He studied at Glasgow School of Art under Gilbert Spencer and Hospitalfield Art College under Ian Flemming. In 1952 he was elected as a member of The Society of Scottish Artists, he became a founder member of The Glasgow Group and formeed The Glasgow Group Society of which he was Vice President for 32 years. In 1965 he was elected a as a member of The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, of wihich he also became Vice President and Treasurer.
He went on to become Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Acdemy and later at Gryffe High.
He showed in all the main Scottish public gallaries and many of the best commercial gallaries. His work is now enthusiastically collected and is increasinly sought after.
